To travel on an unbeaten path is lonely. For me, often it is a battle of “what I want” and what others think is good for me. It is exhausting to fend off these voices from the outside that tell me of all the “shoulds”. Being true to me, is to also experience all that is there, the anxiety, the frustrations, the guilt, the doubts, the losses… and it is also being hopeful, being honest, and being real.

I used to think that I should “go there”, and I used to struggle with “going there”. I followed where people went without having my own reason as well. And yet, even though I did get there, I still felt empty in some ways. One day, I realized that I wasn’t happy because this path was too far away from my heart. It’s very difficult on the way of finding my heart, full of anxiety of unknown, but I am content because it’s close to my heart, my real home.

Huh… Good questions! I guess that pretty much summarized what we human are. We all want to belong, but then why do we want to belong? At the same time, why do some people have to be so critical to those who choose their own path? They say they are only trying to help because the other path is either more bumpy or is a dead end. Who is right? Or should I ask which is true?

It got me thinking about questions I have on a society that puts more and more emphasis on individualism, competitiveness, success, and leadership, how do we re-evaluate followers? Like a performer without audiences, a leader would feel lonely too if there are no followers. In a way, a leader still need to follow other people’s heart in order to persuade others to follow…. We want to it but we don’t want it, human are so conflicted and contradicted.

Thank you for a wonderful little story.

    Chi,

Isn’t it unbelievable that we follow without thinking?

Isn’t it so interesting that we don’t think deeply about what we want?

Isn’t it so funny that how we are formed by our culture and society?

    Thanks for your wonderful reflection.
